Philips MG7720/15 trimmer and its functions

The Philips Multigroom Series 7000 MG7720/15 is a versatile solution that takes care of you from head to toe. Unfortunately, you can't expect a close shave like electric shavers that specialize in shaving your face. This trimmer is suitable for men who groom their beard into stubble, for example. Yes, the trimmer can shave quite thoroughly, but not as thoroughly as a traditional razor.

The body of the Philips MG7720/15 trimmer is quite subtle.

If you're looking for a shaver for a close shave, the model-by-model comparisons we've reviewed on the site will help.

You'll get rid of unwanted hair all over your body, on your cheeks or in your nose and ears without any problems. And all this dry or wet, according to your taste and experience. When shaving or trimming hair, the Philips Multigroom Series 7000 provides a very high level of comfort.

Dual Cut Technology

Dual Cut in practice means that the trimmer blade has double the number of blades. The shaving head has a precision finish and the higher blade count gives you the feeling that you are shaving with a truly premium tool, not a clunky razor.

Double the number of edges adds both precision and comfort.
Doubling the number of blades adds to both accuracy and comfort.

Thanks to the Dual Cut, the MG7720 is able to trim beard, hair or facial hair while moving the blade in both directions (both left and right). The result is a faster shave and the trimmer only needs fewer swipes over the area (no skipping).

Automatic grinding

The blades of the shaver are also automatically sharpened during operation. You'll appreciate this feature after a while, when you find that the shaver still delivers the same performance and you don't have to spend money on a new shaving head. However, we did not test this feature of the trimmer during the editorial test. In that case, the test would have to be long-term, really long-term. Considering that the manufacturer provides a 5-year warranty on the device.

Waterproof

Water resistance is a fairly standard feature of all types of shavers and trimmers from mid-range on up. The MG7720 is no exception, as you can use it for both dry and wet shaving. Operating in the shower is not a problem, but forget about the attached cord while shaving. For safety reasons, of course, this is not possible.

Another advantage of the waterproofness is the simplified maintenance of the trimmer.

Fast charging

Fast charging features are not only integrated by manufacturers into electric shavers and epilators, but of course also into trimmers.

Philips MG7720 is no exception. In case you are in a hurry and urgently need to trim any part of the body, then just connect the trimmer for 5 minutes to the power supply, giving you approximately 10 minutes of operation.

Extended 5 year warranty

Philips wants to prove that it trusts its products, so it offers all customers an extra 3 years of free warranty. After purchasing the Philips MG7720/15 (or any other Philips product), simply register (within 3 months of purchase) on the manufacturer's website. Specifically at https://www.philips.com/welcome

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

If the trimmer deserves to be praised for anything, it is definitely the quality of workmanship, which is truly exemplary and easily outperforms even significantly more expensive trimmer models.

The aluminum body of the Multigroom Series 7000 trimmers is partially covered with a decent non-slip rubber that is exactly where it needs to be. The rubberized part is followed on the opposite side of the trimmer body by a knurled, non-slip part, which, however, is the finish of the aluminum body itself.

The anti-slip part is exactly where you'd expect it.
The anti-slip section is exactly where you would expect it.

Aside from the power button and battery indicator, you won't find anything on the trimmer that would interfere with the aesthetic design of the device in any way.

Changing individual tools is simple and the process of changing them will leave you with a solid impression. You will always know that the tool is in place and ready to use.

Many people may wish that Philips had also supplied a stand or charging station with the trimmer. However, you can rest assured that neither is necessary. When you stand the trimmer on its underside, it is stable enough. Since charging will happen every once in a while, you can enjoy not having another piece of plastic cluttering up your bathroom.

Philips Series 7000 MG7770/15

The Series 7000 represents the pinnacle of Philips' range of multi-function trimmers. However, the Philips Series 7000 MG7720/15, described in this review, is not the pinnacle of the range.

An even more refined model is the Philips Series 7000 MG7770/15. The two trimmers may look similar at first glance, but there are a few differences, which will now be described in detail. Only then will you know exactly what you are deciding between.

First, trimmers differ in the material used for body construction. While aluminum was used for the Philips Series 7000 MG7720/15, the manufacturer chose stainless steel for the Philips Series 7000 MG7770/15, ensuring even greater durability of the entire machine.

Also, the number of attachments and combs has been increased from 14 to 18 on the Philips Series 7000 MG7770/15, so you get an even more comprehensive shave for your money than with the Philips Series 7000 MG7720/15.

One of the four new additions is the so-called wide hair trimmer, which gives you an easier shave on thick hair thanks to a wider blade spread of 4 centimetres, compared to the classic 3 centimetres.

Additional accessories include three new combs, one for 4 mm hair, and two more also for hair, but this time with a special purpose. With these two combs, you can trim your hair more on the right or left side, depending on the angle of the comb.

The last difference in comparing these models is the battery life, which will be discussed more in the next section of the review.

Battery life and charging

We move on to the next part of the review, which will be full of praise. While reviewing the OneBlade Pro QP6520/20, we were dazzled by its 90 minutes of battery life in just an hour of charging.

The Philips MG7720 fares even better. The manufacturer declares a runtime of 120 minutes. Even better news is that it takes just an hour to charge. This gives the OneBlade Pro QP6520/20 two more conquerors in terms of endurance. The other conqueror is the previously mentioned Philips MG7770/15. For this one, the battery life has been extended to 5 hours compared to the original two hours. This is achieved after 2 hours of charging.

Philips MG7720/15 has the best battery life of any device tested so far.
Philips MG7720/15 has the best battery life of any device tested so far.

What do these values mean in practice? That depends, of course, on how often you use your trimmer and the amount of care you give your body. Some people will charge the 7720 once every two months, others once every two weeks (with really heavy use). Either way, you'll be impressed with the battery life.

Battery life after an hour of charging is 120 minutes. That means you'll be connecting the trimmer to a charger maybe once a month.

When the battery is low, a subtle white light on the trimmer body alerts you to the need to recharge. The same indicator will also let you know if the battery is fully charged again.

How the Philips MG7720/15 works

Now we come to the most important part of this review. Let's talk about how the trimmer accomplishes its mission and what you can expect when using it.

Although changing attachments and operating the trimmer itself is very simple. The Philips Multigroom Series 7000 MG7720/15 does not fall short in terms of cut quality. On the contrary, the trimming itself is second to none, whether thanks to Dual Cut technology, ergonomics or motor performance.

Everything fits together beautifully and the overall impression the trimmer leaves is top notch.

Hair Trimming

Philips adds 3 comb attachments for hair lengths of 9, 12 and 16 mm to the 7720/15 trimmer variant. Of course, if you need to style your hair in other lengths, nothing prevents you from using the other attachments that came with the trimmer. If even 16 mm isn't enough, the Braun MGK3080 offers a 21 mm extension.

The trimmer can handle fairly thick hair growth and surprisingly, curly hair. However, sometimes you may find that the hair does not fall out of the comb spontaneously. In that case, you'll need to help them out a bit by knocking them out or blowing them out. Fortunately, you don't have to take the comb off for this, so it's not a tragedy.

The trimmer doesn't clip or drag when styling your hair. If someone used it in a professional barber shop, it would be no surprise.

Beard Trimming

Beard grooming is in a similar vein to hair grooming. Again, you don't just have to use attachments primarily designed for beard grooming. If you have a longer beard, use the attachment that suits you best.

Replacing comb attachments is fast and reliable.
Changing comb attachments is fast and reliable.

Using the stubble attachments, the trimmer works absolutely perfectly. Likewise when using the adjustable attachment, with which you can adjust your beard to 3 to 7 mm. Basically, there is nothing to fault the trimmer when using the attachments. The Philips MG7720 does not bite, does not jam and the shave itself is very pleasant.

If you have a beard, for example, and require longer than the supplied attachments, then the aforementioned Braun's MGK3080 model might help to some extent.

Shaving without the attachment is also surprisingly smooth. However, if your goal is to have the smoothest shave, it's definitely a good idea to choose one of the classic electric shavers. But if you're closer to the concept of a trimmer, you can achieve a closer shave with either one of the OneBlade models (a great compromise between trimming and shaving) or with Gillette's Gillette trimmer (if you prefer a closer shave), which uses a razor blade to shave.

The Phillips MG7720/15 simply isn't versatile enough to give you a perfect shave on top of everything else. Fortunately, both the OneBlade and the Gillette Styler are so reasonably priced that you can buy them as add-on tools. Or simply use a razor or your current electric shaver.

Body Hair Trimming

Body hair is usually more delicate than hair and beard. In terms of the Philips MG7720 trimmer, this means one thing, even less effort. When it comes to shaving sensitive areas, you will again appreciate the double number of blades on the shaving element and especially the injury protection attachment. The shave is softer and the razor does not bite. However, pay some attention to the pressure you exert on the trimmer when shaving. We were unable to injure ourselves in the editorial office, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.

Nose hair trimming

In the 7720 model variant marked "15" (after the slash), you also get an attachment that is designed for trimming nose and ear hair. Trimming may tickle your ears. However, it's nothing you can't get used to. When trimming nose hairs, the attachment may even pull on you now and then. However, this is not something that a man using this trimmer would not be able to withstand.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning and maintenance is very simple. After use, simply detach all attachments from the trimmer, then wash them carefully under running water, dry them gently and you're done. Then you can use the trimmer again without any further worries.

Trimmer maintenance is a water rinse, simple.
Maintenance of the trimmer consists in rinsing with water, simple.

If necessary, you can also use the standard supplied cleaning brush. Most of the time, however, you can get by without it.

As mentioned earlier in the review, the trimmer blades are kept sharpened completely automatically. No need to lubricate them, so they are completely maintenance-free.

Who is the trimmer suitable for?

The Philips MG7720/15 really has very few weak points. In almost everything it offers, it also excels. If you're looking for a workhorse, a companion that will take care of you from head to toe, you've just found it.

A trimmer probably won't just appeal to you if you crave the close shave offered by classic electric razors or razor blades, for example. But you can complement the Philips Series 7000 with these for even better results.

You won't be disappointed if you have a long beard and want to trim it using the comb attachment instead of scissors.

These two small shortcomings, however, will not concern most customers. For the majority it will be essential:

  • top-notch workmanship,
  • perfect performance for trimming thick hair and beards,
  • 120-minute battery life (with just one hour of charging),
  • wide range of standard tools,
  • absolutely maintenance-free operation.
