Philips Series 7000 HC7460/15 belongs to the family of trimmers of the renowned company, which rightfully holds the position of one of the leaders in the market of men's shaving accessories. The Series 7000 represents one of the most sophisticated trimmer ranges ever created. So how will this specimen fare? Find out in this review.

Accessories

Accessories, among other things, make this trimmer an interesting product, so it is worth describing it in detail here. So what do you find in the package?

  • Philips HC7460/15 hair clipper,
  • adjustable hair comb 1 to 7 mm,
  • adjustable hair comb 7 to 24 mm,
  • adjustable hair comb 24 to 42 mm,
  • charging cap,
  • cleaning brush.
The contents of the package could be more varied given the inclusion in the portfolio.

The 7000 Series is certainly not the only trimmer line from Philips containing machines designed for hair styling. Developers from Philips have introduced more such trimmers as part of the Series 5000. In order to make a really good choice about which trimmer is right for you, you need to know as much information as possible.

For this reason, the individual differences between the two series will be listed here. To make the comparison more illustrative, as a counterpart to the Philips HC7460/15, the HC5450/80 will be introduced here and the individual differences will be discussed in the section of the review that is dedicated to that topic.

Philips HC7460/15 trimmer and its features

In the original this trimmer is called Philips Hair Clipper and it must be said that the developers have really done their best to make this trimmer satisfy even the most demanding users. So, what features put it well above average?

Choose from 60 haircut lengths

This trimmer provides almost total freedom in terms of hair length selection. With three adjustable combs and the option to use the trimmer without a comb, you can choose between lengths from 0.5 to 60 mm. In the case of the first comb, which covers a length of between 1 and 7 mm, the gap between each step is 0.2 mm, and for the other two combs it is 1 mm.

You adjust the trim length with the plates on the shaver body.
You can adjust the trimming length with the plates on the body of the shaver.

In the case of the HC5450/80, you can choose from an incomparably smaller range, from 1 to 23 mm. At the same time, however, it's worth noting that the Philips HC5450 offers a beard comb, unlike the model described in this review, making it a semi-multifunctional shaver, compared to the HC7460, which is focused purely on hair.

Intuitive controls and fine mechanics

Single length adjustment is done via two buttons on the front of the trimmer. These are connected to a motorised length adjustment system that automatically moves the combs to the selected position. So, unlike other trimmers, you can achieve consistently repeatable accuracy to within tenths of millimetres thanks to this innovative technology.

Your set length will be shown on the display located above the two buttons. Another advantage is that the clipper will remember the length at which it was last used.

In contrast, the HC5450 relies on classic mechanical length adjustment where you literally have everything in your hands. Here, the individual sizes are adjusted using a toothed roller located in the middle of the machine.

High performance and DualCut technology

The cutting unit itself is made of stainless steel and features DualCut technology, which basically means that the individual blades are sharpened on both sides and therefore cut hair twice as fast as a regular clipper without this technology. High performance is guaranteed by Turbo mode, which is automatically activated when needed.

The blades are also self-sharpening and therefore remain as sharp as when purchased, even after many uses. The entire trimmer is equipped with a robust steel cover to prevent possible damage in case of a fall.

The HC5450 also features DualCut technology and the blades themselves are made of steel (higher models are fitted with higher quality, titanium blades), ensuring they are durable and sharp enough to last longer. Turbo mode is also available here, so if you encounter thicker hair, it won't be a problem.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

For the production of this trimmer, mainly plastic was used, which is used for the entire rear part of the machine, and metal was used to make the cover, which protects the front part of the machine and the trimming unit from impact damage.

The interchangeable combs are made of plastic sturdy enough that there is no risk of breakage or damage.

The shape of the body contributes to great device handling.

Similar to the Philips MG3740/15 multifunction trimmer, here the manufacturer spared the buttons. There are only three. Two that can be used to control the trim length adjustment. Another indispensable button is the one for switching on and off.

The Phillips HC5450, on the other hand, is made entirely of plastic, as you'd expect from a trimmer at a lower price point. In other areas, it can be described as broadly similar to the 7460.

Battery life and charging

This is an area where the Philips 7460 shines. Like the other trimmer in the 7000 series, the Philips MG7720/15, it offers the user famed battery life after a very short time spent on the charger. The battery life claimed by the manufacturer is true to life. The charging hole is located at the bottom of the trimmer. A nice bonus is that the trimmer can be used even while charging.

Although in its price level, the Philips HC5450 is an exception due to its battery life, it cannot compare with the 7000 series. An hour on the charger gets you half an hour less, or 90 minutes of use without charging.

The powerful lithium-ion battery provides up to 120 minutes of cordless operation after 1 hour of charging.

How does the Philips HC7460/15 work?

The trimmer was available for the editors to test for two months, so all its strengths and weaknesses were examined in detail based on its use on different hair types. It was therefore time to summarize the findings.

Comfort

In terms of ergonomics, there is nothing to fault the machine. The trimmer is very well made and, since it cannot be used in the shower, there is no need to fit anti-slip elements. However, the trimmer is also shaped in such a way that it is virtually impossible for it to slip out of your hand. But even if it does, the steel cover prevents more damage.

There is no need to take great care when putting the combs on, they are made of high quality plastic and therefore there is no risk of them breaking. However, there is no harm in being careful, the combs are sure to last that much longer.

Haircutting

Philips HC7460 truly lives up to all expectations. It can handle even the thickest hair you put it in front of. As long as the hair is reasonably thick and tangled, it really cuts it without any problems.

The main advantage of this trimmer is the wide range of lengths it provides. Choosing between hair lengths from 0.5 to 60 millimeters is certainly not common and when using the machine, it is definitely a pleasure and, most importantly, greatly expands the possibilities of cuts.

The length adjustment system is simple and the automation of the whole process ensures that you always cut to the same length.

Thanks to Turbo Mode, the trimmer can handle even the thickest hair. The problem only arises if you are trimming really thick hair on the top of the head. Here, there is so much hair to trim that sometimes the space between the blades and the comb becomes clogged and needs to be knocked out.

This is, however, a situation that occurs only in exceptional cases and otherwise the machine works without any problems.

Another drawback is the lack of water resistance, which precludes use in the shower or with a wet palm. However, many users would probably not even use such a feature, so the manufacturer has opted for the option of using it with a power cord.

Compared to the described model, the lower model Philips HC5450 suffers from more ailments. First of all, the razor is less powerful despite the presence of Turbo mode and therefore slows down and clogs much more often than the HC7460. In addition, Turbo mode is not automatically activated, so it is important to remember to activate it when necessary.

But, unlike the Philips HC7460, the HC5450 also offers a separate beard trimming comb, slightly expanding its use.

Cleaning and Maintenance

As mentioned above, the machine is not waterproof. However, the clipper head is, so that it can be rinsed under running water if necessary to prevent the accumulation of cut hair at the shaver head drive. If even this process is not enough, it is possible to use the brush included in the package.

The polished front panel, which is prone to fingerprints, will require special maintenance.

Conclusion - who is the Philips 7460 suitable for?

I have no choice but to state that this trimmer is a very hilarious device. It perfectly accomplishes what it is designed to do. It offers users a wide choice of possible trimming lengths and can handle even very thick hair.

This is a great combination of quality materials and innovation. The trimming itself is very fast and comfortable, thanks to the DualCut technology and Turbo mode, which is activated at higher hair density. All this ensures an even better shaving result. The long battery life puts this trimmer among the best you can get for the price.

This trimmer is simply suitable for men who are not afraid to pay extra for quality and want to do as much as possible for their perfect look. The Philips Series 7000 Hair Clipper HC7460/15 definitely deserves a place in the men's bathroom.
