The Philips HC5440/15 is one of the most interesting hair clippers. Philips, the company that launched it, has long held an excellent reputation among customers. So how will this particular trimmer fare?

Accessories

There's not much hidden in the cardboard packaging of this trimmer, yet the Philips HC5440/15 has a lot to offer. So what do you find here?

  • hair clipper itself,
  • trimming attachment,
  • cleaning brush,
  • charger.
The contents of the package are modest. However, at this price level, this is to be expected.

Model HC5440/15 is definitely not the only trimmer in the entire line called "Series 5000". There are other models, and in the jumble of individual product numbers, individual differences can get lost. Therefore, the available versions of the reviewed trimmer will be listed here together with an interesting alternative machine.

First of all, there is an almost identical sister version to the Philips HC5440/15 trimmer, called the HC5440/80. The latter differs from the trimmer described in this review by its higher price, which is due to additional accessories.

These include a beard trimmer attachment and a plastic carrying case that makes the trimmer easier to handle on the go.

Philips HC5450

Philips has thought about customers who are willing to pay extra when developing trimmers. That's why it launched a higher-end version of the trimmer reviewed here, called the Philips HC5450.

Once again, there are two versions to choose from, the HC5450/15 and the HC5450/80. As with the trimmer described here, the difference again lies in the different accessories.

The main difference between the HC5450 and the 5440 lies in the battery and the materials used to manufacture the trimmers themselves. For the sake of clarity, the individual differences will be described in the relevant sections of this review.

Philips HC5440/15 trimmer and its features

The original name of this clipper is the Philips Hair Clipper, and that says a lot about its primary function. The developers at Philips have really done their best to make this trimmer do its job perfectly. This is the result.

Reducing friction cutting unit

This trimmer features a stainless steel cutting unit that cuts twice as fast as conventional Philips trimmers thanks to DualCut technology. The double-ground blade line is designed to drastically reduce friction, further enhancing the performance of this trimmer.

Robust steel housing provides protection from damage and impact. Because the blades are placed close together, they sharpen themselves during use, so they will be as sharp as when you first turned them on after several years of use.

24 lengths

When cutting hair, you can choose between 24 different cut lengths ranging from 0.5mm to 23mm. Everything can be adjusted very easily using the toothed roller located at the top of the machine head. However, the shortest possible length can only be achieved after removing the comb.

Simply adjust the length using the wheel integrated into the trimmer body.

As mentioned above, the HC5440 and HC5450 models differ from each other by, among other things, the materials used. While stainless steel blades were used for the trimmer described in this review, both the HC5450 and HC9450 models feature titanium blades for even better performance.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

As you would expect with a product at this price level, the main material used for manufacturing is plastic. This does not detract from the trimmer in any way. On the contrary. The trimmer feels good to hold when shaving and is lightweight. The special cut-out shape also helps.

The trimmer is ergonomically shaped for great handling.
The ergonomic shape of the trimmer makes it great to use.

When shaving with a wet palm, it does not slip in any way and it is not equipped with special anti-slip elements either. The attachment comb is made of a hard enough plastic to prevent breakage during transport or attachment.

Similar to the MGK 3080, the manufacturer was stingy with the buttons (which is not a bad thing). There is only one on the top of the trimmer to turn it on and off, and then one on the bottom to quickly detach the shaving head.

Unlike the 5450, there is no button to activate Turbo mode, which is not available for this model and you will have to make do with one constant power output.

Battery life and charging

The power cord is similar to all Philips products, (unlike Braun's razors, such as the Series 3 3000s model) so it's not curved and is long enough. The hole for connecting the charger is located at the bottom of the trimmer, so it won't get in the way if you wish to use the trimmer while the power is on.

Charger = reliable classic.
Charger = reliable classic.

The time given by the manufacturer for charging and the endurance unfortunately corresponds to reality. With a low battery capacity, after about an hour of comparison, the machine loses power and its capabilities continue to deteriorate as the power loss progresses.

75 minutes of use without a cord after a long 8 hour charge.

The higher model HC5450 already achieves completely different values in the field of battery charging. Within an hour, its battery can be charged for another 90 minutes of demonstration.

How does the Philips HC5440/15 work?

The trimmer has been available for free testing in the editorial office for a month, so it's possible to evaluate it objectively today. It has been exposed to a variety of hair types and lengths, so it is almost safe to talk about how well it works.

Comfort

Ergonomically, the trimmer cannot be faulted. Thanks to its special shape, it fits well in the hand and there is almost no situation in which it could slip out.

But thanks to the steel covering of the cutting unit, it would be well protected even in the event of such an accident and a fall from a height to the ground. Despite the very low purchase price, the materials used are of very high quality and the trimmer performs well in this area as well.

Hair Trimming

It is said that there is power in simplicity, and that was the philosophy behind this trimmer. No unnecessary attachments, functions or buttons, everything is simple and result oriented. And it has to be said that as long as you don't put too thick or tangled hair in front of this trimmer, it will do its job well.

This emphasis on simplicity can be a problem for heavy users, though. For such customers, you're better off with one of the multi-function trimmers, such as the Philips Series 7000 7720/15, which offers professional head-to-toe care.

When hair is straight and shorter, the trimmer works perfectly. The problems come if the hair is longer or tangled, in which case the trimmer has two flaws. Due to the lack of a turbo mode, the trimmer simply doesn't have the power to handle thicker growth, and you need to proceed slowly to avoid pulling on the hair instead of cutting it.

The next problem is more of a design problem. In the case of thick hair, the space between the trimmer itself and the comb fills up quickly with cut hair, so it is very often necessary to detach the attachment and shake out the hair.

Despite the large spacing between the teeth of the ridge, clogging occurs in some cases.
Despite the large ranges between the teeth of the comb, in some cases clogging occurs.

Cleaning and Maintenance

As with most trimmers, there are two ways to clean the HC5440. Either by using the included brush or by detaching the entire shaving head and rinsing it under water.

Maintenance consists of a simple rinse with water.
Maintenance consists of simply rinsing with water.

It is also necessary to regularly remove the attachment and shake out any hair that gets caught underneath.

The blades do not need any special maintenance. There is no need to lubricate them with oil, and thanks to DualCut technology, the blades grind themselves.

Extended warranty for 5 years

Philips wants to prove that it trusts its products and so offers all customers 3 years of free extra warranty. After purchasing a trimmer (or any other Philips product), all you need to do is register (within 3 months of purchase) on the manufacturer's website. Specifically at https://www.philips.com/welcome.

Conclusion - who is the Philips HC5440/15 suitable for?

If we are to judge this trimmer, we have no choice but to say that it is definitely a good device. Designed specifically for trimming hair, it does its job very well.

It does have its faults, mostly the lack of a turbo mode and the problem with hair cut if you are trimming thick hair. This makes it suitable for all men who don't have much hair and want a trimmer they can rely on.

In the end, the Philips HC5440/15 combines well the low price, the workmanship and the technology used. As they say, a lot of music for not much money.
