Over the years, Philips has built a reputation among many men for producing high-quality trimmers that they can always rely on. How does the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 beard trimmer live up to this? Find out in this review.

Accessories

Because it is only a beard trimmer, the contents of the package are not as rich as, for example, the Philips Series 3000 MG3740/15 multifunction trimmer.

In the package you will find:

  • trimmer itself,
  • charger,
  • cleaning brush,
  • user manual.

Features Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15

As mentioned above, the Philips Beardtrimmer Series 5000 is a trimmer designed primarily for your beard. That's why the manufacturer has equipped it with several interesting features.

Even trimming

Failure to provide an even cut, a common shortcoming of some trimmers, is definitely not an issue with the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15. Thanks to the integrated comb, the beard is lifted to the height of the blades when shaving. These are thus able to trim all beards at the same length, without having to go over one spot multiple times.

You can remove the adjustable comb from the trimmer, or control it with the integrated wheel in the trimmer body.

This trimmer also features double-sharpened blades that rub together to keep them sharpened so you don't have to worry about a thing. That way, you can be sure that the trimmer will remain as powerful and functional as it was on day one, even after a long time.

17 length settings

The great advantage of this trimmer is the flexibility it offers in choosing the length of your beard. You can choose between 17 different trim lengths. The trimmer is equipped with only one integrated comb, which is connected to a control roller that allows the entire comb to be manipulated as required. The Philips HC5450 hair trimmer offers a similar roller.

Adjusting the cut length is easy and always at hand.

Unlike many other trimmers, the BT5200/15 offers a choice of beard lengths from 0.4 mm to 10 mm, so you can choose between a really short stubble or a really grown beard.

For those users who like stubble, the developers have prepared a pleasant surprise. From 0.4 to 1 mm, the difference between the different adjustable lengths is only 0.2 mm, while from 1.5 mm, the comb can be moved in 0.5 mm increments.

Water resistance

The shaving head and body of the shaver are waterproof. This simplifies cleaning after use. Water resistance is fairly standard in this class. Competitors in this price range offer the same.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

As you would expect with a beard trimmer at this price level, the body is made mostly of plastic. The trimmer is complemented by several rubber elements to prevent slipping when wet shaving.

A very useful component is the rubberized roller, which makes changing the trimming length very easy even with a wet palm.

The shaving head itself is made of stainless steel and is thus very durable even in the event of a fall. The integrated comb is made of plastic but has a robust impression, so there is no need to worry about its durability.

Similar to the Philips Series 7000 MG7720/15, we only find an on/off button, along with an LED that only lights up when the battery is almost dead.

Battery life and charging

Battery and battery life is another of the many bright spots of this trimmer.

An hour of charging will guarantee 60 minutes of use without a cord.

This is the battery life and charging time given by the manufacturer and differs only slightly from reality (which is due to the density of the beard the trimmer cares for). The trimmer can be used plugged into the mains, even if it runs off the battery. The battery will reach full charge after one hour. Each minute on the charger is thus a minute of operation.

The charger and power method are standard. Nothing that would surprise you in any way.

A battery like this is often not commonplace even in other trimmers, and not only at this price level, and therefore makes the Philips BT5200/15 a very interesting product.

How does the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 work?

This trimmer was available for testing for one month. Therefore, it was time to summarize the findings.

Comfort

In terms of materials and construction, there is nothing to fault the trimmer. Considering the price of the trimmer, the materials used are perfectly adequate and structurally the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 is well put together. Nothing creaks and everything fits as you would expect.

As mentioned earlier in the review, a big plus is the rubberized roller for changing the length of the haircut. The material it is made of makes it very easy to use even with wet palms.

The trimmer is not too loud, which also adds plus points to the resulting shaving comfort.

Beard grooming

Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 is definitely not a bad trimmer. However, it does have its weaknesses, which should be looked out for and taken into account when purchasing.

The trimmer can handle many of the tasks you put in front of it, but there are some that it simply isn't up to. We'll talk about those in the next part of the review.

String

First of all, if your favorite beard style is stubble, then the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 trimmer is for you. With small increments between each trim length ranging from 0.4mm to 1.5mm, you really have the ability to choose almost any stubble length you can think of.

If, however, you desire a smooth shave, the Philips BT5200 will obviously disappoint you. The integrated comb can be removed, but even then the device is not capable of a truly smooth shave. For such a task, you'd be better off choosing another standard rotary or foil electric shaver.

Plnovous

Next, if you have an average or lower density beard, the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 really delivers what the manufacturer promises. In this case, the trimming is very regular thanks to the integrated comb.

In the case of very thick and twisted beards, however, it is the integrated comb that becomes an obstacle. The individual teeth are too close to each other and thus cannot perform the announced task. That is, to separate the individual tufts of beard and get them upright for easy trimming.

As a result, in the case of a very thick beard, you may need to go over one spot more than once to shave it to the desired length.

But as mentioned above, the Philips Series 5000 BT5200/15 is definitely a very interesting and useful trimmer. The problems described will concern the absolute minimum of users.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Thanks to the waterproof shaving head, there's nothing easier than shaking out the trapped beard and rinsing the shaver under running water after shaving. Alternatively, the included brush can be used for more thorough maintenance.

As part of maintenance, we recommend disconnecting the trimmer head and cleaning underneath as well.

The blades do not need to be lubricated and thanks to the self-sharpening they will keep good condition. However, the trimmer has not been subjected to a long-term stress test. What will happen in 5 years' time is still a question. Since the trimmer is manufactured by Philips, there is probably no need to worry.

Trimmer - who is the trimmer suitable for?

This trimmer is definitely a product that has a lot to offer. Whether you like the battery life, the great adjustable trimming comb system or the prospect of an even trim and impressive stubble.

Unfortunately, there are small drawbacks and limitations to be reckoned with. For men with thick and wavy beards, it is very difficult to use the Philips BT5200/15 effectively. The problem is particularly acute with longer beards.
Nevertheless, the pros far outweigh the cons and therefore this Series 5000 model certainly deserves its place in the men's bathroom.
