The Braun BT5070 is a mid-range trimmer for dry trimming of longer beards and hair. You can shave while the trimmer is connected to the power cord, or give it 5 minutes of rest on the charger for one shave. It offers 2 trimming blades. Check out the review for details on how they work.

The Braun BT5070 trimmer offers great variability in styling your beard. It gives you up to 25 lengths to choose from. You can trim your beard from 1 to 20 mm. After removing the attachment, you can then easily shape them with a wide or narrow trimmer without the attachment.

Features of the shaver

The Braun BT5070 trimmer's features are largely based on the sliding attachments, which offer up to 25 different lengths. From 1 to 20 mm. The height of the smaller attachment is changed with a rotary wheel and the larger attachment with a button.

Once you choose the right position for the extender you lock it in position using the lock (button).

The trimmer can be used for shaping or shaving without the attachment. Once the attachment is removed, you can either use the large trimmer or slide out the additional integrated trimmer for detailing and hard-to-reach areas, which you won't find on the BT5050, for example.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

Braun has gone for a sleek black and a combination of matte and glossy plastic for the BT5070. The handle is slightly curved to fit well in the hand, but there are no rubber anti-slip features.

Fingerprints will be visible on the shiny parts.

Battery life and charging

Braun BT5070 is designed for dry grooming only, so you can use it even when it is charging from the mains. If you forget to charge it beforehand, it doesn't matter, just plug it into a wall socket. Of course, it's much more convenient to groom your beard without the annoying cord.

The BT5070 trimmer is equipped with two Ni-MH batteries (nickel-metal hydride). It reaches full charge in 60 minutes. Then Braun promises up to 50 minutes of operation. In our experience, for thick beards, the availability is shorter in the first charging cycles and only increases with subsequent use.

Ni-MH batteries do not have a memory effect, so the trimmer does not always need to be completely discharged. Unfortunately, these batteries suffer from more self-discharge than Lithium-ion batteries. So you may find that your trimmer will be completely drained after a long period of time.

The trimmer also offers a quick charge option. Just 5 minutes on the charger and you can shave once.

Battery and charging status is indicated by the BT5070 with an LED. When it flashes green, it is charging. When it is lit, the machine is ready for operation. If it is running low on power, the light flashes red. In this case, however, you will have time to finish shaving and connect the trimmer afterwards.

The BT5200/15 beard trimmer from rival brand Philips, which is in a similar price range, offers 60 minutes of action after an hour of charging, as does the Braun MGK3080. The cheaper OneBlade QP2520/30 universal trimmer can only manage 45 minutes after a long 8-hour charge. A real stalwart among universal trimmers is the Philips Series 7000 MG7770/15, which offers up to 300 minutes of use after 120 minutes of charging. You'll pay extra for this superior performance.

60 minutes of charging and 50 minutes of operation is a good average for the price.

The device automatically adjusts to a voltage of 100V - 240V, so you can charge it with no problem even in the US where the voltage is 110 to 120V, for example. However, you will need to buy the necessary socket adapter, which is usually not offered by the manufacturers as part of the package.

How the Braun BT5070 shaves

The Braun BT5070 comes with 2 trimming attachments that allow you to adjust the trimming length. With the small attachment, you can choose the length from 1 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm increments. With the large attachment, you can trim from 10 to 20 mm in 2 mm increments. You can also use the machine without the attachment. The special thing is that both attachments allow a trimming length of 10 mm. We would have appreciated the additional trim length rather than duplicating them.

With the BT5070, you can customize your stubble exactly to your liking. To within 0.5 mm.

The variability it offers makes it ideal for sculpting longer beards, lizzies and even hair when needed. With the BT5070 you can style longer stubble well. Use the attachment to trim it to the desired length and the attachment-less machine to shape it so it doesn't look like you just forgot to shave. The trimmer is equipped with stainless steel cutting blades that trim even long, thick beards without painful pulling.

The large blade of the trimmer is quite high quality. It's worse with the smaller blade, which is designed for close shaving. It often pulls your beard and its workmanship is quite poor. Plus, you have to watch out for unwanted "adjustments" to your beard. When using the shorter blade, the large blade is also active and so the risk of unintentional trimming is not small.

The large blade trims and does not pull, the small blade is the opposite.

This model is designed for dry beard trimming only. If you like to groom your beard wet, look to the amphibious models in the Philips OneBlade range or the versatile Braun MGK trimmer

Cleaning and Maintenance

Braun BT5070 is not completely waterproof (you can't take it in the shower) but it is washable. After shaving, you remove the attachments, blow dry, lightly shake out, clean with the included brush, and remove any remaining beard under running water.

Turn the trimming blades outwards in a sliding motion and also clean thoroughly. Allow the clipper to dry and drip some of the included oil between the blades to keep it in good condition. After each shave, apply a drop of lubricating oil between the blades.

Warranty

Braun offers a standard 2-year warranty on the BT5070. If you want a trimmer with a longer 3-year warranty, focus more on models from the Philips brand, which offers a free 1-year warranty upon product registration.

Who is the Braun BT5070 for

If you're one of those with a longer beard or stubble and you're keen on a groomed look, the Braun BT5070 is the trimmer for you. For a solid price, you can dry trim your beard to any shape and length. The BT5070's voltage range, quick charge, battery and mains shaving make it the ideal choice for travellers too.

If you prefer to shave wet, measure up to models from the Philips OneBlade, Braun MGK, or the top-of-the-line Philips MG universal trimmer line. For a comparable price, you can get the Pro QP6510/20 or the Braun MGK3080, which you can also take into the shower.
