The Series 5000 shavers are right in the middle of the Philips portfolio. However, Philips has redesigned the mid-range, giving the products the new ergonomic body you may know from the higher-end Series 7000 and Series 9000. Along with that, of course, comes new features that the lower grades don't logically offer. Does this make the Series 5000 an interesting compromise in terms of features at an affordable purchase price? This may vary from model to model. We've compiled a list of the most interesting ones for you.
The 5000 Series doesn't offer the breathtaking features you'd look for in top-of-the-line models. But for the undemanding, it offers more than enough features. The definition of the entire line could be summarized as follows:
In the spirit of the above characteristics, Philips for the Series 5000, for example, does not offer a cleaning and charging station to the same extent as competing brands. In our opinion, this is a pity. Braun Series 5, which represents the mid-range of planchette shavers, offers a cleaning and charging station for mid-range and even low-end products to a greater extent, so you have no problem buying a device with this accessory.
What is generally true not only for the Series 5000, but for Philips products in general, is the possibility to get an extended warranty for 3 years. After purchasing a product from this brand, simply register at www.philips.com/welcome
As mentioned in the introduction, the Series 5000 differentiates itself from the lower grades by introducing a shaving head with a rounded profile that makes it glide better on the skin while protecting it. For us, the shape of the shaver body and shaving head is the main reason why you should choose a model from this series, or the Series 7000 or Series 9000.
This technology focuses on capturing and shaving both long and short beards. The outer part of the shaving head is differently shaped and also perforated. The shaped cut-outs guide longer beards to be trimmed and the perforated part captures mainly shorter beards.
Multiprecision technology is followed by Lift & Cut technology. When you shave, your beard is not just trimmed with a knife in the shaving head. The main trimming blade is seconded by a lifting blade, which, before the trimming blade even hits the beard, catches the beard and lifts it upwards for a closer shave.
This part might evoke in many something like - the more directions, the more Adidas. But the opposite is true, thanks to the new body, this category of shavers has nothing to be ashamed of at all. The shaving head fits even on a rugged face. If you want even more, the Series 9000 models offer a shaving head that swivels in 8 directions, and even here the difference is really noticeable.
With the new ergonomic shaver body comes a different trimmer concept. Philips calls it SmartClick. As the name suggests, its magic is that you just click it in. In practice, it looks like you detach the shaving head from the body of the razor and attach the trimmer. The advantage is the better ergonomics and precision of the trimmer, the disadvantage is that you have to think about the trimmer all the time when travelling because it is not part of the body of the machine.
Aquatec is essentially nothing more than the Wet & Dry system we know from many other models. This means that in addition to dry shaving, models with this designation also offer the option of wet shaving, using foam or gel and, of course, thanks to the waterproofing, also directly in the shower.
Of course, shavers are designed to be water washable or to be used for wet shaving in the shower. However, neither we nor the manufacturer recommend immersion or washing in a dishwasher.
The S5100 is one of the simplest variants in the Series 5000 class. What does that mean? It won't break the bank, but you'll still get more than the Series 3000 models would offer. The shaving head swivels in 5 directions. Indication of low battery (single level only), charging, need to clean, shaving head replacement indication, and also travel lock activation indication.
This model will be especially appreciated by those who forget to charge the razor and take advantage of shaving with the power cord attached. With this option, however, you will have to accept the absence of the Wet&Dry shaving function.
The lithium-ion battery lasts about 40 minutes, which isn't much, but it thankfully only takes 1 hour to charge (not like the cheapest OneBlade model).
In case you come across a model S5110/06, don't be alarmed. It's just a different color scheme (gray-black, S5100 represents blue-black).
This variant offers essentially the same thing that the S5100 will offer. The difference between these two shavers is their colour scheme. This is again the same case as with the S5110 (grey-black). The S5100 is blue-black, the S5130 is red-black. So why is it listed here? From time to time retailers offer these models at different prices and it would be a shame not to save money. Unless colour is not a priority for you.
Unlike the S51xx models, the S54xx models bring a feature that is sure to please all gentlemen with sensitive skin. Yes, it is Wet & Dry. That is to say, the option where you can shave with both the dry method and the wet method. In addition, the shaver allows you to use gel or foam when shaving, and it will not get damaged in any way.
Unfortunately, the absence of the Wet&Dry feature means you lose the ability to shave with the cord attached. Therefore, you must always unplug the shaver before use.
In addition, this model also offers better battery life. It's only 5 minutes, so the total battery life is 45 minutes (it takes 1 hour to charge). But you never know when those 5 minutes will be crucial.
As for the other features, they are basically identical to the models bearing the S51xx designation. Specifically: a shaving head that swivels in 5 directions, a low battery indicator (single level only), a charging indicator, a cleaning indicator, a shaving head replacement indication, and a travel lock activation indication.
The description of this model will be identical to the S5100 and S5130. Functionally, there is no improvement over the previous shaver. However, your taste might benefit from a different colour scheme. If you don't care about this minor difference. You will appreciate the fact that the S5420 or S5400 can be offered at a discounted price by retailers and you can make a nice profit.
We come to a product that, with its features and mid-range classification, stands out slightly. The S5550 offers an even higher battery life of 50 minutes. The battery indicator is now three-level. The discharge, charging, cleaning, head change and travel lock indicators remain, of course, as in the lower models.
This model is great for gentlemen with more sensitive skin not only because of the Wet&Dry technology, but also because of the SkinProtection system. This is based on the shaping and material of the edges of the individual shaving elements.
The S5550 in the 44 variant also offers a rather unusual accessory in the form of a nose hair trimmer and a turbo mode that increases the shaver's performance by 20%.
