If you're aiming for a very close shave, the Philips OneBlade will absolutely blow you away. It's unique and cannot be directly compared to conventional shavers. However, it will certainly find a clientele. It is also a great choice for those who like stubble. You will be disappointed by the lengthy charging and the relatively high price of replacement blades. In our opinion, however, it is worth the result.

Philips with the OneBlade has taken a completely different approach to electric shaver and trimmer design. The result is a stunning green trimmer. But is this rather revolutionary idea a good one? The answer to this question can be found in our detailed review of this hybrid device.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

What is the lifespan of the OneBlade replacement blade?

You will usually need to get a replacement blade after 4 months of use. The manufacturer itself declares a blade life of 4 months when shaving 2 times a week. This figure may vary depending on how often you use the trimmer. The blade should therefore last on average for 30 shaves.

What replacement blades do I need to buy for the Philips OneBlade QP2520/30?

Genuine replacement blades from Philips are code-named QP230/50. These blades are designed to fit the entire OneBlade model range. Due to the frequency of replacements, it is definitely worth looking for discount promotions on these additional accessories.

What type of blade does the trimmer have and what makes it unique?

The Philips OneBlade QP2520 features an innovative double-sided blade that makes beard shaping in particular very comfortable and precise. In turn, the rounded tips of the blade ensure that no skin irritation occurs when shaving (with standard pressure applied).

How long does it take to charge and what is the battery life?

It takes nearly 8 hours to fully charge the shaver, so it is ideal to charge the device overnight. On a single charge, you will get a battery life of 45 minutes, which is enough for approximately 5 shaves (in the case of daily shaving). However, if you use the machine for example twice a week to trim and shape your beard (it takes more time), expect a battery life of only 2 uses.

What kind of beard grooming does the Philips OneBlade QP2520 offer?

You can use the Philips OneBlade QP2520 men's trimmer in a variety of ways, from trimming to shaping to shaving. With the included comb attachments, you can precisely trim your beard to 1, 3 or 5 mm.

What are the main advantages of the Philips OneBlade QP2520 men's trimmer?

The Philips OneBlade QP2520 is a simple but very practical trimmer that offers different beard grooming options (trimming, shaping, shaving). The comfort of shaving is ensured by the swivel shaving head, the double-sided blade, as well as the waterproofness that allows both dry and wet use.

Accessories

When you open the package of your new Philips OneBlade shaver, you will see the following contents inside:

  • the shaver itself,
  • replacement shaving blade,
  • 3 comb attachments in 1, 3 and 5 mm lengths,
  • power adapter,
  • user manual.

The contents of the package are very similar to traditional trimmers. So let's take a closer look at what makes the Philips OneBlade unique.

Features of the Philips OneBlade QP2520/30 shaver

In the case of this device, don't expect an extensive rundown of all sorts of features, as is the case with flagship brands such as Braun and Philips. The Philips OneBlade is a simple device whose concept is simple. It's a trimmer, not a Swiss Army knife. Still, you can enjoy the waterproofness of the device, which of course entails the possibility of both dry and wet use.

Cuts, Shapes, Shaves

Philips OneBlade offers a variety of beard grooming options. Since it is a trimmer, it will surprise no one that it can trim beards in different lengths. With the included combs, you can trim your beard to 1, 3 or 5 mm. For the QP2530/30 model 1, 2, 3, 5 mm and for the "Pro" models 12 and 14 different lengths respectively.

For example, the Philips OneBlade Pro QP6520/20 offers one comb attachment that you can adjust to 14 different lengths ranging from 0.4 mm to 10 mm.We've described a detailed comparison of shavers in a specialized article.

Thanks to the double-sided blade, shaping your beard is really comfortable and very precise. You can see everything perfectly and you don't have to wrap your hand around your head, Philips really deserves praise for this.

You can shave both in the direction of beard growth and in the opposite direction.

With this trimmer you can also shave. Thanks to the rounded blade tips, there is no skin irritation. However, you must not put excess pressure on the trimmer. In such a situation, the razor will already irritate you. Of course, the shave is not very thorough compared to conventional blades or electric shavers. However, if you don't like thoroughness, this is also an option.

Flexible shaving head

Another thing that the manufacturer has managed to do is a swinging shaving head, which perfectly follows the contours of the face and allows for a comfortable shave or trimming of the beard even on sharp facial lines.

Swivel shaving head beautifully follows the curves of your face

Besides that, the shaving head can handle 200 oscillations per second, which as a user you don't have to worry about. However, if it was only 50, you would surely know the difference. The flex system is part of the blade, which is replaceable. This fact is of course reflected in the price of the blade. The Philips OneBlade would also deserve a travel lock and a better indication of battery or charging status. As a user, however, you'll have to accept that you won't get either a lock or better indication on this model.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

At first glance, the OneBlade looks like someone took your standard razor and made it electric. The green color of the blade impresses everyone. And that's whether you like it or not. It's simply distinctive. It gives the OneBlade a sporty yet sleek design. There's nothing more to say about the built-in shut-off button than that it really is as simple as you can imagine. The first press starts the shaving head, the second press turns the trimmer off. Simple.

The shut-off button is separated from the handle by a gently protruding edge. This makes it easy to detect by touch and avoids unwanted pressing during shaving. The size of the button will please everyone, those with large and smaller fingers. Its feedback is clearly legible. The shaver's dark front side captures fingerprints and water droplets more easily than it might seem at first glance. Fortunately, these marks are only noticeable if you focus on them. Otherwise, they won't get in your way too much.

On the underside of the oval handle you'll find an LED indicator. This will flash when the battery needs to be recharged. Expect the same behavior from the indicator until the battery is fully charged. It's fairly standard that the handle is topped with a socket for the power connector, and this green beauty is no different.

Philips OneBlade is surrounded by a rubber surface that provides perfect grip. The tire-like rubber imprint pattern is surprisingly functional, allowing the OneBlade to hold confidently even when your hands are covered in shaving foam. You can expect an equally reliable grip even in the shower. Yes, as mentioned, the trimmer is completely waterproof. You can shave in the shower and rinse it with water as you please.

Design shallow backside
Design shallow backside

Expect nothing on the back of the shaver. Logically, no trimmer. You will only find the product information. The Philips OneBlade belongs to a line of electric shavers that are not made directly in the brand's homeland, but in Indonesia. Whether this is an issue for you is entirely up to your preference. However, don't expect products from Europe or competitors in this price range. The back of the device could certainly stand a more interesting design.

Quality of workmanship

The processing quality of the device will certainly not disappoint you. On the other hand, it won't dazzle you either. Logically, you cannot expect premium materials such as glass or aluminium anywhere. But don't despair, it's no different with the significantly more expensive models. The important thing is that the OneBlade doesn't squeak anywhere and the parts fit together well. Compared to competitors at this price level, this is one of the best crafted devices.

Battery life and charging

Only a simple LED in the prong area of the shaver handle will tell you when you need to recharge. Don't expect any countdown or notification of the last few minutes of battery capacity. For your money, you get the simplest possible solution. More LEDs indicating the charge level (even if it's in thirds) would be appreciated by everyone. Along with the OneBlade you will receive an adapter, which is also commonly supplied with many Philips electric razor models. Why do you need this information?

  1. If you already have a Philips product, you will get an extra adapter (for example, for travel).
  2. It also means that the adapter works in the 100 - 240V range, which is standard for Philips. Again, great for travel.

To charge the NiMH battery, just plug the adapter into the appropriate connector and wait an infinite 8 hours. The machine then repays you with a battery life of 45 minutes, which is not dizzying compared to the competition, but it is enough.

But is it really necessary to wait 8 hours? Charge the Philips OneBlade overnight just in case.

If you shave every day, you can squeeze a full 5 shaves out of the machine. However, if you use the device as intended (i.e. twice a week to trim and shape your beard), expect the battery to last for two full shaves. Considering the charging time, these figures are really poor.

Battery life and power is a big weakness of this device. But pay attention to what Philips OneBlade offers in terms of trimming and shaving your beard.

The saving grace in terms of battery life and length of charge is certainly the Philips OneBlade Pro, which offers a 90-minute battery life and lasts just an hour on the charging adapter. Compare the OneBlade models here.

Shaving

The blade that Philips provides you with the OneBlade model is something of a work of art. Quite seriously, you won't find anything like it anywhere else. The blade is about the size of razor blades. Combined with sitting on a rather large body, it looks rather comical. But don't be confused by the size of the shaving head. The Philips OneBlade is a masterfully designed machine.

Looking closely at the blade, you can see the green edging of the so-called ridge, whose rounded tips protect your skin from injury. As you move the trimmer across your face, the beard gets between this spacer and is trimmed by the oscillating blade. You will have noticed that the green edging of the comb is located on both the bottom and top of the shaving head. This allows you to use the OneBlade in both directions, which is unprecedented in the world of trimmers. The centre of the shaving head has a square or diamond pattern. However, this piece of metal is not just there to look good. Philips has designed the blade in such a way that the trimmer glides very smoothly over the skin, without any snagging.

Thoroughness

You'll be surprised, but with this device you'll cut your beards to an absolute minimum. The thoroughness is even comparable to some of the lower ranges of conventional electric shavers. However, you won't get as close a shave as with higher-end shavers with the Philips OneBlade. And that's exactly right given the purpose and design of the shaver. You'll get the best performance with the trimmer on a 4+ day stubble. You certainly don't have to worry about longer beards. If your beard grows upright, you'll enjoy shaving and won't have any problem with it. In case your skin is covered by a close-fitting beard and also beards growing in different directions, you will have to exert more pressure when shaving. Below you can see the result when using standard shaving pressure and higher pressure.

Result after shaving at stadard pressure

As you can see, the OneBlade can shave you quite thoroughly. Such a shave is the result of a total of 6 passes (3 back and 3 forward).

This type of shave benefits those plagued by an ingrown beard. The OneBlade is absolutely excellent against this vice.

You simply can't get rid of your close-fitting beard with the Philips OneBlade. Even if you try to trim from different angles and the aforementioned higher pressure. You can see the result of your efforts in the photo below.

High pressure shaving result
High pressure shaving result

As you can see in the picture. Although the clipper left the beard quite long in some places, it caused painful injuries in other places. The type of beard is central to how close a shave you get with this machine. Regardless of what kind of beard you have, the blade was not designed for a perfectly smooth shave. This is something to keep in mind.

Beard grooming and trimming

Attaching the appropriate attachment from the package gives you the ability to trim your beard to the desired length. Unfortunately, it's only in one direction. By attaching the comb, you lose one of the greatest advantages of the OneBlade. One consolation is the ability to insert the comb in both directions. The impression that the trimmer left on us with the comb on was actually quite confusing. While the trimmer worked reliably with medium beards, it had quite a problem with thicker and curlier hair. This is due to mis-navigation of the serrated comb to the blade. Regardless of the cause, performance with the attachment was not satisfactory with the type mentioned.

With the attachment on, you will also likely have trouble trimming the beard under your nose. The attachment will simply hit your nose before the blade gets to where you need it. Last but not least, the combs also tend to clip. Especially when trimming long and thick beards. Not only do thicker beards require more blade passes, you also have to remember to loosen the clogged comb.

Detailing

Philips OneBlade did noticeably better when it came to beard shaping and detailing. The reversible blade allows for convenient shaping anywhere on the face and as a bonus, you can see all the work. You do virtually nothing blindly.

As with any other type of trimming, detailing will give you better results with medium beards. Individuals with long and thick beards are unfortunately out of luck.

Trimming sideburns, beards, mustaches or any other part is really precise and comfortable compared to other trimmers.

Cleaning and Maintenance

We will keep the cleaning very short in this review. There is simply nothing to go on. Just rinse the blade, combs and the stand itself with water, shake out the trapped beard and you're done. As far as cleaning is concerned, you don't have to worry about anything else.

Maintenance is even easier than with a razor.

Now, however, rather negative news. As you would expect blades are not forever. However, they do not last 2 years, as is often the case with planchet or cutter shavers.

The manufacturer declares the life of the blades to be 4 months when shaving twice a week. And they're cheap? They're not!

Unless you replace the blades after the claimed 4 months. You can of course expect worse and worse shaver performance. The figure may of course vary slightly depending on how often you use the trimmer. However, this time interval has been set by the manufacturer for two shaves per week. The blades will last you for approximately 30 shaves. The blades can be changed by pressing the button under the shaver head. When you press the button, which has a really strange and uncertain feedback, the blade is released. You may end up shooting the blade across the room. Try the replacement for real. Before you shoot someone with the machine.

Changing a razor blade is very intuitive
Changing a razor blade is very intuitive

Intuitively attach the new blade back to the relaxed shaving head and your life with Philips OneBlade goes merrily on.

Accessories

Philips has literally created the first trimmer that obliges you to buy replacement blades on a regular basis. Great business model, what do you think?

This fact will surely be what discourages many people from purchasing this product. Certainly many will choose another trimmer where you don't have to change the shaving head at all, or a standard shaver where you change the blades not 3 times a year, but once every two years. On the other hand, Philips offers you an innovative product that provides a very specific shaving experience that the world has never known before. For the price of a Philips OneBlade with one year's worth of replacement blades, you can afford top trimmer models from Panasonic, Braun and Philips and avoid replacements altogether.

Caption - who is the Philips OneBlade for?

While the Philips OneBlade represents an innovative technology between electric shavers and the approach to beard grooming per se, it's certainly not for everyone. Repeated payments for replacement blades will certainly be a topic that will be one of the more significant pieces of iron on the scales. Equally, the OneBlade is unsuitable for those of you who are troubled by beards that are too thick and close fitting. However, for those who are more focused on detailing and grooming their beards this is an excellent choice and will not regret its purchase. Do you like stubble? Then the OneBlade will not disappoint you either and will only give out joy. If you're worried about ingrown hairs, the OneBlade will most likely get rid of them too (it's not a razor). The initial investment in the shaver itself isn't staggering and, in our opinion, is certainly worth a try.

For us, however, we'd recommend the OneBlade Pro, which we also reviewed. While you won't get rid of buying blades, you'll see a huge shift in battery life and charging time. You also get great accessories and many other features with the Pro model. The investment is definitely not so much higher that it doesn't pay off. In our price/performance ratio, the OneBlade Pro wins
