We believe that when deciding to buy a premium shaver, you consider many factors of each product, you compare, you ask about friends' experiences, you read reviews, you simply pay attention. If you make the right choice, your decision will affect the next few years you use your shaver. That's why we have prepared an extensive review of the S9711/31 shaver from Philips. We hope this detailed review will help you make the right decision.

Packaging

You'll already be alert when you buy this product. You may wonder what you've actually bought. But don't be fooled by the size of the box, you won't find a home theater or a washing machine in there, it's really a shaver and full of accessories.

The big box has one more feature. The manufacturer keeps in mind that not every online store cares about the robust packaging of the goods being shipped, so they have sized the box in such a way that you really don't have to worry about ordering Philips Series 9000 over the Internet.

Outside of the great packaging, the machine also protects the poles with two purposes. The first is additional protection for the device against any scratches, the second is to mark the positions of the indicator LEDs on the display.

Accessories

Logically, from a big box you expect a large number of accessories as well. This shaver certainly won't disappoint in that regard. Basically, you'll find everything you'd expect from the brand's top model. No extra miracle gifts that you won't use. Instead, quality standard equipment, which I personally prefer. Less, in this case, is more.

The package includes:

  • shaving machine Philips S9711/31,
  • trimmer,
  • automatic cleaning and power station,
  • 1x cleaning station tray,
  • power cord,
  • hard travel case,
  • plastic tool for removing cutters,
  • user manual.

Digging through the box, you come across the trimmer. Unlike a standard trimmer, which you'll also find in, for example, the Philips S5100/06, this one has an attachment. This can be adjusted to 5 different positions (from 1 to 5 mm).

You must purchase this accessory for lower model series.

Automatic cleaning station cleans, lubricates, dries and charges your shaver at the press of a button.

Travel Case is robust and will protect your shaver even from the often careless handling of your luggage by airlines. You'll also enjoy the compact power adapter when traveling.

Features of the shaver

A shaving head that adapts to your face in all areas. A blade system that can handle even three-day stubble. Beard shaping and adjustable razor power that is always ready thanks to the SmartClean station. That's not all Philips promises its customers. But has it lived up to its promises?

Heads with 8 directions of curve detection

Philips S9711/31 has three individual shaving heads, where each of them is represented by two parts, the blade itself and the so-called guard.

Three individual shaving heads of the S9711

When you look closely, you can see that these shaving head parts have different patterns. The outer part of the cutter is designed to capture and shave longer beards, while the inner part of the cutter is designed to remove shorter beards while helping to lift beards that are close to the skin (such as on the neck).

V-track blades developed by Philips

As the razor glides over your skin, individual whiskers are captured through the outer edge of the cutter and trimmed by the rotating blades of the internal mechanism. To get a better idea, just look at the attached illustration.

8 directions of motion represent movement:

  • the entire shaving unit,
  • the shaving head,
  • individual elements of the shaving head.

I'm sure you gather that the name of this feature was chosen by the manufacturer mainly for marketing purposes. Either way, it's nice that all these parts of the shaver move.

Setting the shaver's power

Philips S9711 allows you to adjust the motor power in 3 levels by pressing the +/- control buttons. Panasonic presents these 3 modes as follows:

  • Low power, sensitive mode: for a gentle but thorough shave.
  • Medium power, normal mode: for a thorough, everyday shave.
  • High power, fast mode: for a fast, time-saving shave.

I personally didn't notice much difference between the modes. However, gentlemen with very sensitive skin may appreciate it.

SmartClean

What SmartClean means is fairly intuitive. We will discuss the cleaning station in more detail in the maintenance chapter. If you haven't owned a shaver with an accessory like this before, you have a lot to look forward to. There's nothing like pressing a button and having the device 100% ready the next day.

Aquatec

Thanks to Aquatec seals, you can choose which method to use when shaving. It's up to you whether you prefer dry shaving, wet shaving using gel or shaving foam, or shaving in the shower. However, you should definitely try both methods, you may be surprised by the results.

Trimmer

You may be used to a trimmer protruding directly from the body of the shaver, but don't look for it here. The SmartClick feature makes it easy to disconnect the shaving head and attach the trimmer. Then choose from 5 different lengths to groom your beard and enjoy the way the shaver works. But see the shaving chapter for more.

Other Features

Of course, Philips' flagship offers many features that would make a solid publication. However, you're probably familiar with these from other models from competing brands. Other features:

  • travel lock (can be triggered by pressing and holding the off button for 3s),
  • charge level indication (0-100%),
  • cleaning indication,
  • head change indication,
  • fast charging for one shave,
  • cleaning indication (flashes after each shave),
  • error message (in case of blocked shaving head and cleaning required).

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

Don't be fooled by the appearance of the machine, although it looks like it is made of aluminum, it is not. The body of the entire machine is made of plastic. Many of you would appreciate the presence of aluminium or glass. However, the Philips S9711 is lighter due to the use of plastic.

Personally, I think it would be appropriate to use aluminum on the machine. After all, the weight difference wouldn't be significant, the construction would gain strength (not that it isn't strong otherwise), and the customer would feel an even higher uniqueness of the device. However, I don't want to impose this opinion on anyone. Despite the use of plastic, the Philips Series 9000 is exquisitely crafted and one can feel its inclusion in the brand's portfolio.

Quality of workmanship for the product's not-so-low retail price is, of course, to be expected. The total weight of 173g is fairly well distributed, so you don't have to overcome the resistance of a poorly placed centre of gravity (in the shaving head, for example). You can thus work with the machine comfortably even when gripping it with two fingers.

Elegant curves will delight you every time you walk into the bathroom

Gripping the shaver with your thumb naturally extended, you can easily reach the off button and the +/- buttons that control the shaver's power.

The control buttons allow you to adjust the power of the shaver in three levels. What's great is that the shaver will remember the set level the next time you shave.

All buttons provide ample feedback with a nice click.

The back of the shaver is covered with a non-slip surface with grooves. This way, it won't slip out of your hands when you shave wet. If you've ever shaved in the shower, you know how annoying dropping a razor is. The groove is in exactly the place you would expect it to be, so it performs its function to perfection.

From the back, the Philips S9711 won't impress you much. That's also why you'll never see it in ads from the back. However, practicality is more important and you will ultimately appreciate it. The power connector is hidden from your view on the underside of the shaver's handle.

Battery life and charging

Philips promises 60 minutes of cordless shaving, or 20 shaves after just one hour of charging. It also adds that this battery life is the longest ever in Philips' history.

The manufacturer shipped the particular test piece charged so much that the last thing the machine did was sound a beep to indicate a critical battery condition. Li-ion batteries should definitely not be stored in that condition for long periods of time.

When you plug in the power adapter, you will be pleased to find that it works in the 100 - 240V voltage range. Whether you are in the USA, Japan, Australia, England or anywhere else in the world, you can be sure of a smooth shave. The only thing missing is a reduction to the appropriate plugs in your location. The manufacturer could have differentiated itself and included this accessory as well.

After a full charge comes the battery life test. This one of course was not just one but a whole series. On average, the machine lasted 57 minutes before it had to be charged again. It looks like the manufacturer lived up to its promises. The Philips S9711/31 does not have a fast charging feature such as the competing Braun Series 9 9290cc. In the event of a complete discharge, you connect the razor to a power source for 5 minutes, giving you time for one full shave.

Unfortunately, for safety reasons, you cannot charge with the razor on. However, this is common practice with Wet & Dry shavers.

Battery status indicator
Battery status indicator

When you reach 20 declared shaves is individual. However, you will always be aware of the battery level, which the shaver displays on the display throughout the shaving session on a scale of 1 - 100%. Of course, it will also warn you before the shaver runs out of power. It wouldn't leave you with half your face shaved and the other half covered in beard.

Shaving

And how does the Philips S9711/31 actually shave? Perfectly!

Dry Shave

As you know from other reviews, I have a really unruly beard especially on my neck. More or less down to my jawline. They grow at all sorts of angles, cling to the skin and few electric shavers can cope with them and I often need countless movements to remove at least most of the hairs.

Thanks to the circular motions that the Series 9000 shaver head allows, the Series 9000 shaver captures far more beard hair than, for example, competing shavers from Braun, which simply don't do the circular motion. Yes, again, the competition has other advantages, everyone has to come up with their own, and I hope these reviews give you a reasonably objective assessment.

I must admit, however, that my first shave with this razor was not enough. Surprisingly, you have to get comfortable with the machine. But you will be high enough on the learning curve after just a few shaves.

TIP: My secret to a perfect shave is to perform curving motions in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction in areas where your skin is covered by whiskers that grow in different directions. For an effective shave, no extra pressure is needed.

The consistency of the shave is exemplary. The shave is not as close as a wet shave but it is close enough to run your palm over your face and say "Oooh, smooth."

Many experts say that the rotary systems of electric razors have a habit of pulling out beards, "biting" their owners and causing them excruciating pain. As far as many inexpensive models are concerned, this is partly true. However, in this class, you have nothing to worry about. The only time I experienced tugging came when I neglected to clean the shaving head several times in a row. However, this was due to my own laziness. If you clean the razor as it should be cleaned, surely nothing like this will concern you.

How does the Philips S9711 work in the shower?

If shaving in the shower is new to you, you might feel a bit strange. The shaver works just as well as a dry shave, except that the water will further encourage the water to glide over your face. I have to admit that I simply missed some areas when shaving in the shower. Do you guys have a mirror in your shower?

If you use a shaving foam or gel, you use your razor to the max. Personally, I found the shave even more pleasant and even more thorough than dry shaving. It's not a big difference, but it is noticeable.

The shaver is probably the quietest shaver tested so far. Even when running at maximum power.

The downside of the shaver concept is in the shaving of details. The relatively wide rings of the shaving segments make shaving under the nose a chore. Likewise the details in the ear area, if you want sideburns. If you want to groom carefully in these tight areas, it's best to use one shaving head and perform circular motions. You'll end up grooming the area under the nose easier than the sideburns.

In practice, however, all razors have some shortcomings. I'm sure you'll forgive the S9711 for these little things. Because the way it handles unkempt beards is amazing.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Of course, when it comes down to it just put the shaver in the station and you don't have to worry about anything. But how often? In my test, I just "shaved" the shaver after three shaves and left it to its fate. On the fourth shave, I started to feel deteriorated shaver performance (not to).

However, it took one cleaning cycle and the cutters worked like new. The first task for proper maintenance is to connect the station to the power grid. Don't be intimidated, the plug goes on rather stiffly and you have to insert it into the station at a rather oblique angle to get it connected the way it should be. However, the connector is keyed, so there is only one right way to connect it.

If you plug in the station and leave it in the bathroom, you won't be bothered by the plugging. For example, if you're traveling and alternate connecting the adapter directly to the machine and the station, you won't be thrilled. In this case, I recommend investing in an extra adapter.

The next thing to do to make the station work is to insert the cleaning fluid cartridge. However, the station can still function as a docking station without the cartridge.

Inserting a cleaning cartridge is a very simple matter
Inserting a cleaning cartridge is a very simple matter

Press the button on the side to eject the top from the base. You then simply pull the cap off the plastic wrapper, insert the refill into the station and push the top back down. Remember! First find a suitable place for your cleaning station before inserting the open media cartridge. The cartridge is not sealed in any way when the dock is closed.

Competitive stations from Braun, for example, are noisier in their manifestation but also with a much shorter cleaning cycle. Throughout the cycle, you are informed of what is happening with the machine on the station's panel.

Put your Philips in the station always after shaving! Or even before shaving if you know you will be shaving in approximately 4 hours. Yes you read correctly, the cleaning process takes 4 hours. If you take the razor out of the station sooner, it will probably be wet. Which won't make you happy if you're a dry shaver.

The station charges, cleans and lubricates the machine to a tee. It is always fully prepared after the process. What's more, everything is done in complete silence.

The length of the cleaning process is a tax on the quiet operation of the station. The shaving head is dried by induced heat, i.e. without a fan, as is the case with noisier but on the other hand faster competitors. Philips declares the cleaning emulsion to last 2 months. The test achieved 6 - 7 weeks until the solution had to be replaced.

TIP: If you clean the razor before each insertion into the station and rinse the open shaving head with clean water, you can extend the cartridge replacement interval.

It should be noted that during this period, the razor was connected to the station after each shave, which took place every day. The prompt to change the solution is indicated by the cleaning station itself.

Unless you replace the tray, you will not be able to run the cleaning cycle until then.

But all it takes is a little effort and you'll instantly extend the life of your shaver, cutters and cleaning cartridge. In other words, you'll save money and your Philips Series 9000 will serve you better too.

The SmarClean unit really takes up a lot of space. Plus the station has to be fairly close to the mains due to the length of the power cable. If you have a smaller bathroom or don't have that much storage space, you won't be pleased. Forget traveling with the unit right away. Another inconvenience is the surface cleaning station. The glossy black is really like a mirror and you can see every fingerprint, dust, simply any dirt. On the plus side, you can disassemble the station and wash it. The station does its job well despite all the drawbacks, if you have enough space and time to devote to the cleaning cycle, then it will only make you happy.

Spare Parts

Since this is the S9711/31 model, which includes a SmartClean station, the most commonly purchased item will be the cleaning cartridge, which is priced at a not-insignificant price compared to the competition. Rather the opposite, compared to the cartridges for Braun Series 9 9290cc they last marginally longer. The replacement cleaning solution is labeled JC302/50.

Cleaning media cartridge

At the standard two-year interval, you will also replace the cutters that carry the SH90/70 (V-Track PRO) designation. You don't have to worry about forgetting to replace the blades, the machine will alert you.

The last possible accessory or replacement part is the SmartClick adapter itself. If you should, God forbid, lose it, damage it, or for whatever reason want to have more than the one that comes as standard, then just reach for the part labeled RQ111/50.

When it comes to replacing the shaving head blades, simply open the shaving head and detach the top section as you would for manual cleaning. After turning the top of the shaving head, you can see the blades which are fixed in position with orange rings. You remove these rings using the orange, mysterious piece of plastic that came with the Philips S9711 shaver.

You can remove the fuselage with the supplied tool
You can remove the fuselage with the supplied tool

After removing the retaining ring, simply lift the shaving head off the pad and the corresponding cutter will remain disconnected in place.

I recommend replacing each cutter one at a time, never disconnect all at the same time!

The locking ring is only held in position by small plastic locks that need to be returned to a specific position. Once you disconnect all the blades at once, it is easy to forget this position. Later, in trying to place the ring in the right place, you will damage the plastic locks.

So always change the blades one at a time so that the correct ring position can be taken from the original blades. If damaged, you will have to replace the entire shaving unit, which is not a cheap affair.

Extended Warranty

For the Philips S5100/06 you can get an extra year instead of the standard two-year warranty. This is no different for the Philips S9711/31 flagship. Just register your purchased device within 3 months of purchase at www.philips.com/welcome. The standard two-year warranty is guaranteed worldwide, which travelers will especially appreciate.

Caption - who is the Philips S9711/31 for?

Here comes the part where I should tell you whether or not the Philips S9711/31 is worth buying. Unfortunately, the world is not black and white, and this answer depends mostly on you. There is no doubt that the machine will give an incredibly close and smooth shave, the vast majority of future owners of this device, will be delighted. However, success does not come overnight. To achieve this level of shave, you'll need to find the right grip.

The workmanship is of an excellent standard. The developers have taken great care with the entire Series 9000. Unfortunately the fixing rings of the cutters did not fail at all. Replacing them is ill-advised and can cost you dearly if the head is damaged.

Unlike the competition, the SmartClean station is quiet does the job very well. However, one cycle consumes 4 hours of time and the whole device is disproportionately large. However, this is only a short summary of the information, which is described in more detail in the review. Unfortunately, no razor is perfect. At least for now.

Some features are crucial and indispensable for some, while for others they may be a mere compromise. The goal of this comprehensive review has been to provide you with as much information as possible so that you can have as much input as possible in your decision-making process and make the right decision.

Philips S9711/31 may or may not be the best electric shaver for you. While this model is the top of the line of what Philips currently offers, it may not suit everyone. What's your answer?
