If you choose this economical shaver variant. You won't have to make as many compromises as you might think at first glance. If you don't have a beard that's too hard and sticks to your skin and grows in different directions, you'll be fine with the Philips S5100/06, which is a great choice in the lower end of shavers.

Philips brings many of the features from higher-end shavers to the 5000 series. How does this affect its capabilities and what can you expect from this model? We've put the Philips S5100/06 through its paces for you and bring you a comprehensive look at it. If you're more curious, let us know your question in the comments below.

Accessories

You won't get much with this rotary electric shaver. On the other hand, do you always use all the accessories that the manufacturer supplies with the shavers, or do you consider them useless nonsense that makes the product more expensive and ultimately you only use the charger? So what do you get with your shaver?

In the package you will find:

  • charger,
  • rotary shaver (without attachments),
  • charger,
  • plastic shaver head cover,
  • manual.

Personally, I would greatly appreciate it if the manufacturer would add a travel case to the package. I would appreciate it for this model much more than the planchet shavers. Why, you ask? Because I travel with my shaver from time to time.

Phlips S5100/06 has a detachable shaving head that you can replace with a trimmer. However, in my travel bag, the two parts sometimes come apart. Since you can't explain safe luggage handling to airport staff, you have to accept that the trimmer will (probably carelessly) detach from the shaving head. You can pack these two components (or 3, including the trimmer) separately, but I already consider that a certain discomfort.

The simple design will appeal to just about anyone.
Simple design fits everyone's eye.

The most ironic thing is that the machine charges the travel lock, so it won't start in your luggage. So the manufacturer both thought and didn't think about travel. Personally, I would welcome the case more than the lock. Because most of the time, the machine won't start in a hardened case.

If you're expecting the manufacturer to include a wealth of accessories with the S5100/06, you're probably going to be disappointed. If you are thinking minimalist and not demanding, this is the way to go.

The trimmer does not include attachments as standard. However, you can purchase them to shape not only your long beard, but also your haircut if necessary.

Model S5100/06 includes an optional extra in the form of the SmartClick beard shaping attachment. However, I don't list it in this chapter because you don't get it in the package. For more about the adjustable trimmer, see the spare parts chapter.

Features of the Philips S5100/06 shaver

The Philips S5100 delivers fairly standard features that you'd also expect in terms of its positioning in your sales portfolio. However, let's take a closer look at them.

Multi Precision Edges
Multi Precision Edges

MultiPrecision blades

The MultiPrecision system offers a close-fitting beard lift function and simultaneous shaving of shorter and longer beards. Similar features can be found on higher-end models. But are they sufficient in the lower shaver ranges? Find out later in the review.

5-way swivel heads

All shaver heads can move in 5 directions independently, ensuring a close shave of the chin, neck and jawline. If you're a fan of razor blades and have pronounced facial features, watch out.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

Anti-slip part with perforations
An anti-slip part with perforations

Understandably, in this class of shaver, you can't expect premium materials like metal, glass, carbon, or similar features that usually only the manufacturers' train ships boast.

Philips S5100 is made entirely of plastic, which is consistent with its inclusion in the portfolio. Despite the fact that this model doesn't have a wet & dry function, most of the surface is made of matte, subtly non-slip plastic with subtle perforations that are sure to please. This way, fingerprints won't be everywhere you look, but only on a minor part of the shaver.

When you squeeze the shaver harder, you'll hardly ever hear any squeaks. All parts fit well. In terms of ergonomics, I can't fault this device.

The grip is secure both in the case of standard shaving and when using the trimming head.

Philips uses a very similar or identical design for multiple product lines. This saves costs for the manufacturer, so you can enjoy getting a silhouette that even the highest end model lines have. Perfect for everyone, don't you think?

Battery life and charging

Philips declares a battery life of 40 minutes or 13 shaves. In reality, of course, it depends on how thick your beard is or how long it takes to achieve the desired result.

During the test, the Philips S5100/06 lasted an average of 8 shaves per charge, assuming a two-day stubble. With a longer beard, the shaving demands increase and you may find that you only get 4 shaves per charge

Which is not the result the manufacturer declares. Compared to other shavers, this is below average.

The charging time will definitely not disappoint you, the rotary shaver is fully charged in one hour. What's nice, however, is the fast charge feature, which gives you time for one shave in 5 minutes, after which you connect the shaver to electricity. This feature is now quite widespread, but it is not a given, and will be especially pleasing for those who notoriously forget to charge the shaver. Yes, I am one of them.

Thanks to the absence of a wet & dry function, you also have the option to shave with the power cord attached.

Shaving

Because we are all different and achieve different results with different shavers, in order to be as objective as possible, the Philips S5100/06 was put to the test over a period of two months by three different testers.

So what is the S5100 like? It's not a razor blade. But I suppose none of you expected it to be.

Comfort and Thoroughness

If you're not a fan of longer beards and most often have no more than 2 days worth of stubble on your face, this shaver is the ideal choice. For such stubble, the rotary shaver glides smoothly over the face and catches the beard with excellent precision.

If you don't shave very often and when you do get around to it, your beard is longer than about 3mm, you'll struggle with this shaver quite a bit.

The Philips S5100 simply can't handle longer beards. To get a good shave you have to swipe your face not once, not twice but many times. If you have sensitive skin, you know what this means for you.

Even with many strokes, the shaver simply doesn't pick up some types of beard and you have to shave it with a razor blade.

This is not an exception with other shavers in this category. The big positive is that the machine only skips the beard, it doesn't split or otherwise injure you. A surefire solution is to use a trimmer first and then proceed to a standard shave with the clippers. Typically, the biggest problem for the clipper is the neck. However, the area above the upper lip is also not easy to cover. The culprit is the relatively wide strips around the shaving heads. With a little practice, however, you can do it with ease.

As already mentioned. If you shave often, you'll be very happy with the machine and won't even miss the wet shaving option. The consistency is more than good considering the price of the shaver.

Trimmer

Where is the trimmer? That's a question you may be asking yourself quite often. If you can find the trimmer, you simply tear the shaving head upwards and attach it to the body of the trimmer. However, we forgive this drawback to the S5100/06 or Philips shavers. The trimmer rewards you with excellent precision and also with the fact that you can see everything.

The precision and ease of manipulation of the pinned trimmer will surprise you.
The precision and ease of handling of the clipped trimmer will surprise you.

Philips offers the option to purchase combs to adjust the trimmer length to 5 possible levels. Simple extendable trimmers from other manufacturers will not allow you to do this. If you wear your hair short, this seems like an ideal choice, right? Do you travel often and use the trimmer a lot? You won't be happy about the lack of a case in combination with a detachable trimmer.

Cleaning and maintenance

The part of the review dealing with the maintenance of the S5100/06 from Philips doesn't make for many lines. Not that there isn't any need to maintain the shaver, but the manufacturer simply doesn't give you much choice either. You don't even get a cleaning station with the shaver, or even a brush, which is usually included with most shavers sold.

How do I take care of my clippers? On the underside of the shaving head, you will find a button which, when pressed, will open the shaving head or the cutters will swing away from the drive at the base of the head.

Manufacturer says to open the shaving head, rinse with running water and you're done. Of course, if you shake and blow dry the machine properly first, you'll do even better.

Maintenance consists of a simple rinse with water.

The brush is not a standard accessory simply to ensure that careless cleaning does not damage the heads. Another part of the maintenance is replacing the heads (marking SH50/50), whose replacement interval is declared to be 2 years. Of course, they can last longer or shorter depending on your beard type and frequency of shaving. Compared to Braun razors, where the manufacturer claims an 18-month lifespan, you're looking at a full six months.

Financially, however, both variants of shavers and replacement blades will cost you essentially the same, as the blades for the lower-end Braun models can be purchased slightly cheaper than a 3-pack of head sets for Philips shavers.

Spare Parts

With the Philips S5100/06, you won't have to worry too much about buying spare parts. The only accessories that you can officially purchase are:

  • MultiPrecision heads, which are common to the 5000 Series and carry the designation SH50/50, you can use this component at the same time not only for the S5000 Series (S5xxx model) but also for the AquaTouch (S5xxx) and Star Wars SW57xx models.
  • SmartClick Beard Shaping Attachment. This is an upgrade that you don't get in the basic package. It is not a spare part but an accessory. This attachment allows you to shape your beard in up to 5 different lengths. The maximum adjustable length is 5 mm and the minimum is 1 mm. The stepping is therefore set to 1 mm, with the extension removed you can then achieve a stubble length of 0.5mm.

Additional shaving heads are a standard replacement part that you can expect to find on just about any serious electric shaver manufacturer.

The ability to purchase an adjustable trimmer will be appreciated by individuals with beards or short haircuts.
The option to purchase an adjustable trimmer will be appreciated by individuals with a beard or short haircut.

What's a pleasant surprise is the beard shaping attachment, which is not so much a replacement part as a premium accessory. Many competitors in this class don't offer anything similar, so you have a pretty good chance of getting more music for good money.

Extended Warranty

A great added value is the ability to extend the warranty by a full year. If you register the shaver within 3 months of purchase on the manufacturer's website: www.philips.com/welcome you get an extra year on top of the standard two-year warranty.

Conclusion - who is the Philips S5100/06 for?

First, let's talk about who this rotary electric shaver is not for. If you travel frequently, use a trimmer, and shave until your beard is noticeably longer than your stubble, then you better look for another product. If your beard is rarely longer than your stubble, the S5100 is a good choice for you.

The shave consistency is the best you'll encounter with a shaver in this price range. This is also a great choice for younger individuals or individuals who have weaker beards. And trust that a teenage male will use it for not only a year or two, but 5 or more years will most likely be no problem.

Philips S5100/06 is, like the Braun Series 3 3030s, the best you can get in its price/performance ratio. If you are willing to forgive the manufacturer for the missing case and a few other details, you will not regret your purchase.
