Philips Series 5000 AquaTouch S5400/06 is a typical representative of Philips' mid-range machines. The mid-range won't offer the stellar features that are common in the higher ranges, but there are still some interesting bits to be found in these, which this shaver undoubtedly is. How it stood up to our review is what this review will answer for you.

Accessories

If you look inside the packaging, you won't find much here along with the machine itself. That's the point, though. The S5400/06 is just right for those who prefer simplicity and minimalist design.

In the package is:

  • Philips S5400/06 electric rotary shaver,
  • trimmer (without attachments),
  • charger,
  • protected shaving head cover.

As already mentioned, the S5400/06 belongs to the Series 5000 range, representing the golden mean of Philips' shaver range. But even within this range, there are significant differences between the machines. There are basically three levels of machines that you can find in this series, and these levels further differ in design, for example.

In order to give you as much information as possible when deciding on the ideal shaver for you, this review will include a comparison of each model in the 5000 series.

Primarily, then, the S5400/06 will be under scrutiny, but a cheaper and more expensive variant from the same series will also be mentioned. Specifically, the S5100/06 and the most expensive machine in the 5000 series, the S5550.

Philips S5400/06 rotary shaver and its features

Now it's time to take a closer look at the various functions of this shaver. These are pretty much classic features, but there are a few things worth mentioning that will pleasantly surprise you.

MultiPrecision technology for a safe shave

Thanks to MultiPrecision, even the most inaccessible areas can be shaved. The shaving heads are rounded and glide easily over your cheeks to protect your skin. But that's not all these shaving heads make possible.

MultiPrecison technology offers a close shave and doesn't pull on the beard.

Super Lift & Cut

For even better shaving results, Philips has equipped the shaving heads of this shaver with Lift& Cut technology, which features the use of two blades. The first one lifts the beard and the second one then cuts it close to the skin.

5 directions of rotation of each shaving head

The maximum flexibility of the individual shaving heads further enhances the smoothness of the shave. Each of the flexible heads moves independently of the other four and can therefore adapt to almost any face shape.

Dry and wet shaving

Philips S5400/06 can be used for both types of shaving. You can choose a quick, dry shave, or you can shave in the shower with the machine using the wet method (using shaving foam or gel). With this feature of the machine comes another advantage. The entire machine can be easily maintained by immersing it under running water.

Gentlemen with sensitive skin will love wet shaving.
Men with sensitive skin will love wet shaving.

However, it is not possible to use the shaver plugged into a charger, just for safety reasons.

This feature is also the first one that distinguishes the Philips S5400/06 from the next machine in the 5000 series, namely the cheapest model, the S5100/06. It cannot be used underwater, so wet shaving is not an option.

If you have sensitive skin, get pimples after shaving or your face suffers from redness, then watch out. Wet shaving with foam or gel solves these problems elegantly.

Trimmer

To make your look truly perfect, it is possible to use a trimmer that can be attached after detaching the shaving head on the body of the machine. It is suitable for trimming sideburns or moustaches.

Unfortunately, you cannot choose the length of the haircut as there is no comb to adjust it. There is an option to buy one, but it is not included in the basic package. The trimmer is available for all 5000 series machines.

With detachable attachments, there is a risk of losing components. According to the editors, the trimmer is more comfortable in the body of the machine.

Intuitive display

The display at the bottom of the machine body is designed to show you only the important information. Here you will find a battery charge indicator, information about the need for cleaning, a travel lock that can be used to lock the machine in case of transport in luggage.

Quality of workmanship and ergonomics

As you might expect from a mid-priced machine, you won't find premium materials here. The manufacturer is saving those for the next higher product line. Yet there is little to fault about the S5400 in this respect.

The body of the machine is made of very high quality plastic, all parts fit very well into each other. Furthermore, the whole machine is covered with a non-slip surface, which is useful in case of wet shaving.

It's virtually impossible for the shaver to slip out of your hand. And even if it does, the solid construction prevents major damage.

The display is perfectly positioned at the bottom of the machine, freeing up space for the large power button.

Compared to higher-end models (such as the Philips S7370/12), the machine lacks a case to put it in for longer trips. The manufacturer tries to solve this shortcoming with a lock that can be activated before each trip, so that at least the machine does not turn on spontaneously in the luggage. Nevertheless, it is only a substitute for a full-fledged case.

Battery life and charging

Philips promises battery life of up to 45 minutes after an hour of charging for the AquaTouch S5400/06. The manufacturer claims up to 15 shaves per charge, which is definitely more than the S5100, but like the S5100, it doesn't match reality.

Over 45 minutes of use - that's about 15 shaves, does the claimed figure correspond to reality?

Depending on the difficulty of the task you put in front of the machine, the number of shaves can vary from 8 to 12 per charge. Which isn't a bad figure, but it's not stellar stamina either.

The charging indication is simple and clear. However, more detailed information about the battery status is missing.

Compared to higher-end models, there's also no charging stand or cleaning and charging station, which is available, for example, on the Philips S9711/31. However, this is understandable given the price of the machine.

How does the Philips S5400 shaver work?

A feature that many users will appreciate about the Philips S5400/06 is the AquaTouch technology, which allows wet shaving using gel or foam. This makes it much gentler on the skin than conventional shavers. What else is interesting about this rotary shaver?

Comfort and Thoroughness

Philips S5400 is absolutely the perfect choice for those men who are fans of shorter beards. This is because the shaver can deal with them perfectly. In the case of shorter hair, the shave is very precise and comfortable. The ideal shave is to shave stubble that has been growing for 2 to 3 days.

Make sure your beard does not grow to a size where it starts to become a problem for the shaver. As mentioned, the Philips S5400 has trouble with longer beards. But they could be solved by one of the available trimmers.

If you have longer hair on your face, you'll need to swipe the area at least twice for the trimmer to catch most of the beard. Even so, some facial hair may remain and you may have to go over the area again, or in a different direction. On the plus side, the shaver does not pull in any way.

Another problem to contend with is the considerable distance that is between each shaving head. It is necessary to get used to the spacing and learn to compensate for the gaps that might arise due to the greater distance with the right movements.

A big problem for the shaper is the neck, especially at the narrowest points. The independence of the individual shaving heads helps quite a bit in this regard, but adjusting to the individual shape of each user's neck can still be a problem.

Milling vs. Plate Cutter

As already mentioned, the Philips S5400 can struggle to achieve an absolutely flawless smooth shave. However, this is not directly a design problem as it is a cutter machine. It is designed more for longer beards. For a smooth shave, you'll need more of a razor.

A good example would be the Braun Series 7 7899cc. Unlike the Philips S5400, the beard here is not shaved by the rotary motion of the cutter heads, but goes between the blades where it is trimmed by the blade. Due to the minimal thickness of the blade, a much smoother face can be achieved with this type of machine, but this is at the cost of possible skin irritation and the need to shave really short beards.

Because the Braun 7899cc belongs to a higher category of shavers, you can expect better features and functions. The difference is therefore noticeable both in the accessories, where a cleaning station and a handy travel case are available, and in the features themselves. Trimmer

A trimmer is also available for the S5400. It does its job very well. It is precise and easy to use. If you also buy an attachment that allows you to choose the length of the cut, your experience with this piece of equipment will be almost perfect.

However, if you're interested in a truly professional trim of long hair or beard, you're better off relying on a trimmer designed specifically for this activity. With the Series 5000, the trimming head is still just a bonus.

Cleaning and Maintenance

There is only one way to make maintenance easy. Philips has not equipped the shaver with either a brush or a cleaning station, so the only remaining option is to rinse the entire shaving head under running water.

The Phlips S5400 doesn't complicate your life with its maintenance complexity.
The Phlips S5400 doesn't make your life any more complicated with its complex maintenance.

Best practice, however, is to first shave the shaved beard from the area under the cutters by tilting the shaving head before rinsing the entire machine head.

Spare parts

For the Philips S5400 it is of course possible to buy spare MultiPrecision cutters, which will need to be replaced sooner or later as they wear out with use. They are marked SH50/50 and are the same for all 5000 series machines.

It is also a matter of course to purchase the entire shaving head. The SmartClick beard trimmer attachment can also be considered as a spare part, allowing you to choose between trimming lengths from 1 to 5 mm. Without the attachment, you can only achieve a pre-set beard length of 0.5 mm.

Conclusion - who is the Philips S5400/06 suitable for?

This electric rotary shaver is definitely a good choice for most men. That is, if you want to achieve a reasonably smooth shave and not let your beard grow longer than a few days' worth of stubble.

You'll especially appreciate the high-quality design in terms of ergonomics and materials, the possibility of wet and dry shaving thanks to AquaTouch technology, as well as the solid battery life, in line with standards common at this price level.

If you decide to go for this machine, you will definitely not be disappointed. There are just some limits to consider. The Model S5400 can't handle beards that are too long, and it's no match for the shaver in terms of shaving thoroughness. However, the AquaTouch technology makes it much gentler on your skin and does not cause irritation.
