How to stimulate beard growth

What is a beard?

A beard is one of the secondary sex characteristics. That is, one of the main differences between a man and a woman. Their growth is influenced by testosterone (male androgen hormone) more precisely by its reduced active form - dihydrotestosterone. And it is true that the more of it the body produces, the faster and denser the beard grows. High amounts of testosterone are bad for hair and cause hair loss.

The difference between hair and beard

Beards and hair differ in cross-section and in the cells of which they are composed. However, the structure of a coarse beard is the same as that of hair. It consists of the cuticle, cortex and medulla. Fine, light and thin beards lack the medulla, or the type of cell that carries the pigment and gives the beard its colour and shine.

Coarse beards are composed of the same cells as hair, but fine beards are not.

The horizontal cross-section of a beard is triangular, whereas that of a straight hair is round, that of a wavy hair is oval, and that of a curly hair is flattened. In the vertical direction, the beard tapers at the root and at the tip, being widest in the middle, whereas the hair is equally wide throughout its length.

Truths and myths about beard growth

Dense beard due to more frequent shaving

Shave more often, your beard will get harder and thicker. I'm sure you've heard this advice before, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. At first glance, it seems that beards grow faster when you shave them, but it's just an optical illusion. You can tell the difference between a perfectly smooth face and a 1-2mm beard by sight and feel. With a long beard, you can barely tell a millimetre or two. Speed, colour and density are not dependent on shaving frequency, but on genetics.

Beards still grow the same

Beard growth is influenced by season and age. Beards grow faster in summer than in winter. Beard growth also generally accelerates with age. The older you get, the faster and thicker your beard will grow. Often they will appear in places where they were not before.

How to stimulate beard growth

Beards or their follicles need A healthy skin, B blood supply and C nourishment.

Healthy Skin

Healthy, clean and moisturized skin is the foundation for beard growth. Massage beard oil into your skin every day, ideally in the evening after bathing. Once or twice a week, use a facial scrub to rid your skin of dead skin cells that can clog pores and prevent new beard growth.

Food for thick hair

Human health and beards are also a reflection of what you eat. To improve the condition of your beard, include foods and drinks in your diet that contain:

  • biotin or vitamin B (B7). It is found mainly in yeast, soy, liver, kidney, beef, egg yolks, soy, nuts and cereals,
  • panthothenic acid aka vitamin B5, which is found in vegetables, cereals, liver, kidney, fish and egg yolks,
  • zinc, which is found in nuts, legumes, tofu, tempeh, whole grains, beef, liver, fish, brewer's yeast, and cheese,
  • silicon, the richest source of which is found in mineral waters, whole grains, beer, chicken skin, and root vegetables.

If it is clear from the list that the vitamins and minerals mentioned are not present in your diet. You don't necessarily have to eat them, supplement them artificially, with supplements. However, keep in mind that the source of these micronutrients should not be primarily tablets. You should only reach for these when necessary.

Get the blood flowing

Once you have the right nutrients circulating in your body, it's just a matter of getting them to their destination, the follicle. Get it into your body regularly. Any activity that gets you properly warmed up counts. And it doesn't matter if you're lifting weights or digging a canal. Massage is another way to get the blood flowing. Massage your face gently in circular motions. Massage ideally 2 times a day, at least 2 minutes in the morning and evening. Massaging for longer will definitely do your beard good.

Beard Growth Products

In addition to proper beard care and wives' advice, you can also use special cosmetics that promote blood circulation to the skin and follicle while nourishing. Don't expect an instant beard that appears overnight, but with regular use the growth will likely thicken.

Beard growth products work differently for everyone.

What's "probably"? Supportive cosmetic products don't work the same for everyone. They'll make one person look like a hairy lumberjack, and another person just get a few hairs on his chin. But it's still worth a shot. Most beard products are mainly designed to take care of the beard that has already grown in, so some of them are halfway between taking care of the existing beard and stimulating of new facial hair growth, and only a few are aimed at stimulating growth top to bottom.

Before looking at the products themselves, we'd recommend getting into the nitty-gritty of beard cosmetics. This interview from Gentlemanstore tells you what beard cosmetics should consist of and what to avoid.

How to care for your beard

Growing a beard is one thing, but caring for it is another. To keep your beard looking to the world, you need to maintain it. The theory: I'll grow a beard so I don't have to take care of it, quickly put to bed. An unkempt beard looks bad, and it's not a pretty sight. If you don't want to take care of it, shave it smooth instead, or read how to choose a razor. You'll be doing yourself and those around you a favor.

To keep a longer beard looking good, you need to take better care of it than a short one.

If you're not put off by the higher standards, you should equip yourself to care for your beard properly. As the future owner of a longer beard, get a trimmer, beard comb and a proper beauty arsenal: special soap, balm, wax or oil to soften texture, skin care and styling. You'll need most of this at home, even if you leave the care of your beard to the pros.

Longer beards need daily maintenance, even if you go to the barber shop regularly.

The basics are shaving and washing. Once or twice a week, wash your beard with a special soap or shampoo and shave your contours (neck, cheeks). Rub a nourishing oil into the beard and the face underneath to nourish, prevent breakage and fraying of the ends, and reduce dandruff. If your beard is curling in all directions, brush thoroughly and condition with conditioner. A daily routine includes combing with a comb.

Be patient, it pays off

There are several ways to speed up beard growth. If you really want a thick beard, try them all. Give it time and be patient. Even if you get your beard going, it won't grow the same everywhere. Most of the time, they start to appear in small islands. It doesn't look pretty, but hang in there, the beard islands will grow and eventually connect.
